What is merino wool?
Merino wool is a soft, durable material that comes from merino sheep. These sheep were selectively bred for their delicate wool fibres, which is what makes the fabric characteristically soft and ideal for wearing straight to skin. The wool we use for our knitwear is sustainable and ethically sourced in Scotland and the wool does not require any chemical treatment for its production, so it is considered a natural, sustainable, and biodegradable fibre.
Why merino wool?
When designing our knitwear collection, we wanted to create something that you can wear all day and can easily pull out year round. Merino is an active and adaptive fabric, in colder weather its ultra-fine fibres will trap air keeping you insulated, and its breathability and moisture wicking properties mean it keeps you cool and dry when it’s warmer.
Merino wool is a lightweight, versatile knit that is suitable for a variety of different occasions. It has all the warmth of a chunkier knit but none of the weight, making it perfect for autumn/winter layering. Additionally, its ultra-fine fibres are 1/5 the width of a human hair, so unlike coarser wools they don’t irritate the skin; merino wool is also naturally hypoallergenic so is cosy even for those with more sensitive skin.
The benefits of merino wool do not end here. Merino wool is also sustainable, biodegradable, flame-resistant, odour resistant, and offers UV protection!
Where do we source our merino wool?
We source our merino wool knitwear from Scott & Charters, a renowned knitwear specialist based in Hawick, Scotland. Established in 1955, Scott & Charters blends centuries-old traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to create high quality, hand-finished and long lasting knitwear. Scott & Charters are also committed to ethical sourcing, ensuring that the finest merino wool is selected from trusted suppliers and uses eco-conscious methods to preserve the environment whilst producing luxurious products. By partnering with Scott & Charters, we’ve been able to develop a line of knitwear that embodies the best of Scottish craftsmanship.
A note on sustainability
Unlike synthetic fibres, merino is a 100% natural, sustainable fibre that will break down naturally at the end of its life creating minimal environmental impact. Moreover, when cared for correctly, our merino wool knitwear could be in your wardrobe for a lifetime. Owing to the wool’s elastic fibres, the pieces will retain their original shape and the natural crimping means it doesn’t shrink or hold odours as easily as other fabrics.
Our ethos is about buying high quality garments you’ll want to keep forever, and our range of fine-gauge knitwear pieces are exactly that.
