What is Selvage denim?
Selvage denim is woven in the old school way, meticulously using a small shuttle. The weft is passed back and forth through the shuttle creating self-finished edge that doesn’t fray, hence selvedge (or selvage). The weave created by a shuttle is stronger than other more modern methods making selvage denim more durable. Traditional shuttle looms are significantly smaller, producing fabric widths of around 30inches , compared to the much wider output of modern looms. As a result, the production process is slower and more deliberate, reflecting the craftsmanship involved.
