The idea of Hartford was born in 1979 in New York. Yves Chareton arrived there hoping to recreate the shirts of the American dream: the famous "button down" in madras or oxford, the "westerns " in raw denim and the "work shirts" in chambray.

The encounter with an American manufacturer who agreed to reproduce in lots of vintage fabrics contributed to Hartford's immediate success. Bruce Springsteen was also a huge fan of the brand, and ordered his Hartford shirts by the dozen for his tours.

Hartford was quickly characterised by the quality and authenticity of its products, researching colours, prints and unusual mixture of materials.
