A Little Bit of History
The true origin of jeans has been disputed, some trace them back to Nîmes in France (think De Nîmes, like denim) others Genoa in Italy (think Jean). But jeans as we know them didn’t really come around until the 19th century when denim became the preferred workwear fabric choice, most notably for western cowboys in the US. Tough, reliable, and built to last, denim was already a staple, but it was Levi Strauss’ addition of copper rivets that turned work trousers into what we now call jeans – the symbol the working man’s wardrobe. Jeans continued to prove their worth, and were worn widely by military personnel throughout the Second World War. However, it wasn’t until after the war that jeans gained their edge, thanks to counterculturists ranging from beat poets to motorcycle gangs. It was only natural that pop culture would follow suit, with iconic moments in film like James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause cementing Jeans as part of our wardrobes forever.
